| The Old Washington Jail is conveniently located just 9 miles north of Hope in the Old Washington Historic State Park. |
|
It was originally constructed in 1872 and served as the Hempstead County Jail until 1939. The Jail was completely renovated and reopened as a Bed & Breakfast Inn in 1982. |
The dining room still has "graffiti" from the original jail. The walls and ceiling of the old jail are made of concrete that is two feet thick which makes an already tranquil setting most serene. Many of our guests say they have not slept so well since childhood.

Washington was an important stop along the Southwest Trail
during the 19th century. It was the capital of Arkansas during the Civil War,
and James Black crafted the first Bowie knife here. Many of the historic buildings and homes have been restored and guided tours of the park are available. In addition, Washington also hosts many special events that include the Jonquil Festival, Frontier Days, Civil War Re-enactments, and Christmas in Candlelight. |
