Brief History of the Little Rock

Air Force Base

Jacksonville started out as a small town about 20 miles north of Little Rock. The population of Jacksonville slowly gained in size during the late 1800's.  New businesses such as general stores and hotels began to spring up all over the infant town.  Jacksonville's population was small well into the 1900's, in fact, the population had only reached about 400 in the 1940's.

After World War II the United States Air Force was asked by the people of Arkansas to consider putting an air force base somewhere in central Arkansas. After a long evaluation process they chose the Jacksonville site. The Little Rock Air Force Base was born. The still small town had little idea what role the air base would soon play.

Jacksonville continued to grow. It slowly changed from a small town centered around a dirt road to the bustling city that it is today. Jacksonville became a well known town around Arkansas, the Air Force Base has brought much attention to this formorly unknown city. The Air Force Base, when first commissioned provided many job opportunities for Arkansas, as it still does today.
